Prior to the DIR-825, I had used a DI-514 802.11 g, that performed very well, for nearly 10 years. The DIR-655 interface is very similar to the DIR-825. The WiFi performance certainly is NOT. My test setup has a D-Link DWA-160 Dual Band adapter as transceiver. With the DIR-825, this adapter consistently holds 270 – 300 Mbps. In fact, at this moment, the DIR-825 is communicating at 243 Mbps with a 64% signal strength on the 5 GHz band. The DIR-655 is a single band 2.4 GHz router so, during testing, I turned off the 5 GHz band on the DWA-160 Adapter. Results?: with 100% signal strength, the DIR-655 would not talk above 162 Mbps (talking to a D-Link adapter!). It spent about 40% of its time at 162 Mbps, another 40% at 108 Mbps, and the remaining 20% at 80 Mbps or LOWER. Out of the box, it was stuck at 54-80 Mbps until making a few configuration changes. Speaking of the firmware, don’t try making any more than a couple changes between reboots. I was forced to do a hard reset back to factory settings twice, after making 3 or 4 changes at once. I did spend about 8 hours testing this router, trying any configuration changes which might improve performance. I may have missed ‘the one’ change that makes all the difference. If I did, it is well hidden. I also tested with other brand adapters, getting similar WiFi performance. To be fair: I am comparing the performance of a 2.4 GHz router, {which competes with a Bluetooth Transceiver(also 2.4 GHz), and other 2.4GHz adapters}, to a 5 GHz router, which has no such competition. The interference may well be the cause of the poor performance. Regardless, the router would normally be used in environments with this type of interference and should be able to adapt.I purchased this item primarily due to the price. My refurbished price was 1/2 of new retail ‘on-sale’ price. Still, I was expecting better performance. The one redeeming factor is the Gigabit Ethernet ports.IF you need the Gigabit Ethernet ports, and higher WiFi speeds are important, and you want to stick with D-Link products, consider getting the DIR-825 for about 50% more than the DIR-655.IF price is the primary factor, higher WiFi speeds are important, and you don’t need Gigabit Ethernet, consider nearly any other 300 Mbps router instead. In my case, the Gigabit IS important AND I got this one on a price dip, so I’ll keep it (don’t think I could return it anyway). At the lower price, it is worth the money — BARELY. I’d strongly recommend AGAINST buying this model new and paying retail. The refurb I received was the B1 Hardware version, and the 2.07 Firmware version (both the newest). I’ve not had any problems (yet)with D-Link durability. Their simpler ‘g’ version was a good value. If you happen to go with the dual band DIR-825 (a decent Home/ Home Office / Home Theater Router, if purchased @ or under $90), make sure you get the ‘B’ hardware version (all new 825s should be B versions). The ‘B’ IS DD-WRT compatible (the A is NOT). The DIR-655 is NOT dd-wrt compatible.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseAmazon Customer5.0 out of 5 starsA great router solutionJuly 24, 2016Verified PurchaseThis wireless router provided an immediate boost in signal strength and connection speed. It replaced an older D-Link wireless router and the speed increase is immediately noticeable. The controls for the router are very easy to access. It has a feature to throttle back the range, which reduces the number of my neighbors who can see my network. It provided multiple hard-wired cable connections in addition to the multi-channel wireless capability.I am very happy with this product.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuseTerry Cox1.0 out of 5 starsI waited too long to report that I had a …March 21, 2015Verified PurchaseI waited too long to report that I had a problem with my router *because* I thought it was an issue with the ISP (internet service provider). End result was that the router is faulty and keeps losing the connection. I have to continually restart the router (at least 5-6 times every day and every morning just to get the connection up and running).Tried SO MANY trouble-shooting techniques (actually learned quite a bit about routers in the process). However, this router – the one I actually purchased, not this particular model in general – was faulty and I got stuck with it. I will likely be buying a ‘new’ DIR-655 router, but not going to take another chance on the refurbished one. (DLink actually gave me an RMA and authorized me to send it in and get a new one). However, I didn’t qualify for the return because I had purchased a refurbished one. :(Read more Helpful Comment Report abuse11 Terabytes2.0 out of 5 starsUnreliable wifi, annoying disconnectsDecember 12, 2012Verified PurchaseIt replaced an 8 year-old Linksys router which had begun to drop wifi connections from time to time (= a couple of times per week or so). I figured a new router with N wireless was in order. The D-Link worked flawlessly for the first couple of months, with a satisfactory wifi reach in my house (although not better than the old non-N Linksys), but lately its wifi has developed annoying and entirely unpredictable dropouts, requiring frequent resets. (Frequent = at least a couple of times per day.) The wired connections to our desktops still work fine, but the wireless ones to our laptops and tablets as well as to our TVs suddenly disappear — and then reappear again for a few hours after I’ve pushed the reset button, before the game repeats itself. Very annoying. Since it’s out of its 90 day warranty, I guess I have to order a new router soon.Read more Helpful Comment Report abuserbkay784.0 out of 5 starsNot all DIR-655’s are created equal!November 3, 2010Verified PurchaseI’m on my second unit after the first one had range issues. When I replaced my old G-band router I expected to get better (or at least the same) range with the DIR-655. Unfortunately that was not the case, as my range was effectively cut in half. I made several calls to D-Link and they stepped me through some configuration changes, which did not help. After 3 calls, they told me to return it to Amazon and request a new one. Amazon’s exchange policy was quick and painless. With the new router I have the same range as my old G-band model, but the speed is quite a bit better. After setting up the new one, I noticed that it was hardware version A4 as opposed to the first one, which was A2. With all that being said, if you get an A2 model and have issues, you may need to exchange to get a later hardware revision. As far as the router goes, the setup was ridiculously easy and so far the performance and reliability have been fine. Plenty of features in the firmware to tweak. I haven’t messed with the USB port yet, but other reviewers have some complaints on that one. Right now I’ll call this a decent router for the price.Read more 10 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 103 reviewsWrite a customer review Pages with related products.
