In these cases it’s clear that the reviewer has not given themselves or the device enough time to truly shake out in a real world evaluation. I have owned this Toshiba encore for only 9 days now and I have to admit I’ve had to hold myself back almost every day from breaking my own rules and writing a glowing review. In the meantime I’ve put it through its paces to see if it can become a part of my professional workflow and personal interests. I’ve pushed the Encore hard and made deliberate attempts to exceed its operating capacity. Given the low cost Atom processor and 2 GB of memory I expected that I would quickly exceed its limits. Instead it far exceeded my expectations. I should probably check back in a year and tell you if I’m still using it. But, given the lack of evaluations on this brand-new product, I thought I would go ahead and post my impressions.I bought this intending for it to be a portable doodle and digital note taking pad. I already have a full size laptop computer and Ipads. The Encore will be a companion device for certain kinds of travel meeting notes, and ‘lean back’ work modes and well as digital sketching and art. I am a professional designer. I love my iPad but without a precision stylus it falls far short of its potential.I am very impressed with this little device especially for the price. Wacom’s new consumer class pen which is included with this tablet has far exceeded my expectations. I have a Cintiq, several ‘penabled’ tablet PCs and I also have iPads with lots of styluses. While I am a Wacom fan, I also wrote a very unfavorable review on Amazon of the Wacom Intuous Creative 2 stylus for the iPad so I’m not dogmatic about Wacom. I am not easily impressed and I am very informed about pen computing. This new Active ES technology from Wacom is great. It has better parallax shift and edge accuracy than the professional digitizers. Its pressure sensitivity is outstanding for a consumer class pen and impresses me as a digital artist. Although, be forewarned in case you’re not stylus user, that the full expression of pressure sensitivity is largely dependent on the application that you’re using a stylus in. That is to say, it works well with the included Toshiba apps and other built-in paint and drawing apps from Microsoft Its pressure sensitive and has a built in eraser button – very handy. But it truly shines in an application like Manga Studio or Autodesk Sketchbook. This dependency on software would be true of any high-quality pressure sensitive stylus.Metro Modern apps that I have deeply tested and that I’m impressed with include:- Autodesk Sketchbook – Simple sketching and painting with pressure sensitive tools (free versions) The pencil and airbrush in this program are very delicate. Sketching with a pen while using multi-touch for pan and zoom is a ‘holy grail’ standard for stylus computing. The new version of Sketchbook is a great match for thisDevice.- Drawboard – PDF reader with annotation (sync with a cloud account to share with other devices)- OneNote – The Metro/Modern version is pretty stripped down but its effective for both typed and handwritten notes…But where this small tablet really surprised me was in its ability to handle some desktop apps like:- Microsoft Office – Including the full version of OneNote and PowerPoint. Both of these applications can be configured to be used with a stylus And Microsoft’s built-in pressure sensitive ink work well.- Manga Studio – For those that don’t know, this is a full feature drawing and painting application used by many professionals that is on par with Photoshop for sketching and art. the true sensitivity of this new Wacom pen really comes out in this program. I can easily make a stroke with the application’s pressure sensitive pens that go from one pixel to over 500 pixels in thickness. the encores processor can keep up with multiple drawing layers and fairly large canvases (I tested up to 2000 by 3000 pixels)- Sketchup 3D (free consumer version called Make)Let me be clear, I am not recommending the Encore as a 3D machine. Its too underpowered. On the other hand Sketchup is a program that I use a lot and I wanted to see if I could break the Encore. It worked really great until I turned on shadows and full textures on a large model – then it got laggy but still didn’t crash. Predominantly, this is an example of a desktop application that I did not expect to work at all. 3D is very computer intensive. But it worked just fine and is even fun to use. Some multi-touch gestures even work. Really surprised me.This is no guarantee that the product is going to work for you. This does not have a high fidelity screen on par with the iPad’s Retina display. I think Toshiba’s choice to use the lower fidelity screen to keep down the cost and power consumption makes perfect sense. But, if you require highest-in-class resolution, then you may not like this device. It’s still better PPI (pixel per inch) resolution than the original ipad and most PCs from just five years ago.The note taking and sketching ability of this device are top notch for its size and category. Keep in mind, if you haven’t used a precision stylus before on a computer that you are writing on glass. It feels just like a pencil on glass – hard and slick. A matte screen protector can induce a little friction and a more paper-like feel. The Encore comes with shiny and slick glass right out of the box. This isn’t a problem if you know what to expect. If you don’t need a precision stylus, then there are cheaper or better alternatives. But if you need a low-cost 8′ Windows tablet with an excellent pressure sensitive stylus, this is an outstanding product. I’ve tried most of them.I can’t recommend this as a solo primary computer unless you have pretty light needs (keep in mind I have lots of computing requirements). On the other hand if you think you can get by doing most of your work on an iPad but want a stylus – you could probably have this be your only PC.The software ecosystem matters. If you want a tablet primarily for media consumption, like watching TV shows, movies, and playing games, and you want a large ecosystem of all kinds of apps, then in general Android or iOS are going to be a better ecosystem for you.If you are not familiar with the Windows 8.1 operating system and don’t understand the difference between the desktop and the modern interface, then right out of the box this product may seem like it has a steep learning curve for you. If you are already a Windows user and know how to configure a Windows 8 system out of the box this should be easy for you.Because of the small screen and lack of physical keyboard the setup process for Windows 8.1 is made slightly more difficult. If you don’t already have a compatible keyboard I would recommend you get something should you order this tablet. I already had a Logitech Bluetooth K 810 keyboard which works spectacularly well with his tablet. You may barely use the physical keyboard once you get the machine set up. But it’s very useful for those first few days of setup and configuration IMO.Here is the last and perhaps the most important thing to hear in a recommendation. I don’t need this tablet. As I mentioned above, I bought it as an experiment to see how well it might be able to enhance my overall computing set up for portable note taking and to have a fun and easy to use full-color professional paint tablet. Now that I have it, if I broke it or lost it an hour from now, I would order another one from Amazon before the end of the day.Read more 70 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abusespiceoflife5.0 out of 5 starsTried to not like it… But it is so good for writing and random productivity that I am keeping it.May 21, 2015Verified PurchaseMake sure you get some extra AAAA batteries for the pen. They last about 30 hours of writing and go out usually when you need them most. I Have been searching for a good handwriting input thing for years… From a t902 to that asus note thing… To a Wacom intuos. This beats them all hands down. I am trying not to like it and it isn’t working. See the picture as to how I use it. I am in medical school and use this at home primarily to study and take notes into onenote. I keep onenote for Mac up on the screen and it updates within a few seconds with office 365. I can also screenshot in the big beast computer and add stuff and it quickly updates the little toshiba.Update: I find myself using this all the time. I have an iPhone 6 plus and a redundant iPad mini, a desktop for most of my study time, and this bridges the mobile computer gap need to format a random pdf and use actual desktop tools for a minute or two that I need them each day. There are many normal productivity things at the hospital that I am blocked from doing and so I have difficulty keeping up with paperwork for rotations etc and this really satisfies that need to be productive with a computer for 20 critical minutes at random times during the day. I carry my mini logitech keyboard and it does a great job of keyboarding. The rest of my day as a medical student is spent in content consumption which I can easily do on uptodate on my iPhone 6 or even on this little bugger. Plus I can handwrite notes in onenote which is nice for shorthand sometimes when you need symbols and doodles to show where things are on a human or simply drawing a face of how they feel etc.Read more 17 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseEwan Grantham4.0 out of 5 starsGreat tablet with just one real flawMarch 21, 2015Verified PurchaseVery nice tablet that I use daily at work to keep up with my calendar, check email, etc. While this is a Wacom stylus, it is a model that requires a battery. Also be aware that the stylus clips to the one side of the unit rather than having an area of the tablet where it can be stored.Only real complaint is that having only a single mini-usb port means you can’t charge this and use a USB Mouse/Keyboard at the same time unless you purchase a special cable from Toshiba that costs about half as much as the tablet itself. Because of the way it senses the charge, many of the 3rd party OTG cables that will work with other tablets will NOT work with this.Given the long battery life on this if you are using occasionally, that isn’t a deal breaker. But if you had to use this to replace a laptop you would be better off finding a tablet that has a second USB port or that works with a 3rd party cable.Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseDaylon3.0 out of 5 starsThe pen is the best I’ve used since the S Pen (Samsung Note series)December 1, 2015Verified PurchaseIt writes well and works well, but the specs leave a bit to be desired, as does the resolution. The pen is the best I’ve used since the S Pen (Samsung Note series), but there isn’t enough to do with it. One Note still doesn’t let you sort your notes alphabetically, so that’s pretty much useless unless you don’t care about organization at all. Evernote isn’t well integrated enough with a stylus, and the stock note app doesn’t sync with your phone. I’m not an artist so I can’t comment on drawing ability. If this were an android with an S Note-like app, some more RAM, and a better screen, it’d get five stars, easy. As-is, I returned it and got a Note 8.Read more 2 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 61 reviewsWrite a customer review Pages with related products.
